Once, years back I was given the opportunity to go to Japan. It was the experience of a lifetime. And a changing one. The concept that touched me most while I was there was the sense of balance and exchange.
I brought back local clay from the area I lived in for the summer. I used that clay as well as an American brand in this sculpture.
I created these two breeds. The yellow Oriental-style is a male Jikeinian. The hatchling he dandles is a male Shellonian. Across from him is a dark blue & black European-style, female Shellonian and curled against her is a female Jikeinian.
The dagger-like scales on the Jikeinian's face are what mark him as a male. Females don't bear these. The Shellonian is female because she lacks the four extra horns that only the male of her breed have.
